Mutige Entscheidungen

THREE DAYS OF DARKNESS
This is not a film by Khavn

It made the censors in the Philippines stutter. The filmmaker, in his vision of the Apocalypse as experienced by three women locked in a ghostly house, was not only inspired by horror, but also by porn films. You have been warned.

It was said of the most productive Dutch novelist Simon Vestdijk that he could write faster than God could read. You could say of Khavn that he makes films faster than God can watch. In his speed and productivity, Khavn made Three Days of Darkness twice: the first time with young actresses and afterwards (this film) with more experienced ones in all respects. So it’s a remake of his own film. And the remake is better – or maybe the remake is the original.
The background for the film was borrowed from a text from the New Testament book of Revelations, the mystical and apocalyptic predictions by the apostle John. When the day of divine revenge comes, three days of darkness will fall over the earth. When three women are together in what is undoubtedly a haunted house, the lights fail during the divine storm. Demons emerge in all kinds of forms in the darkness. Fear, yet strikingly also enjoyment, overwhelms the women. This is the start of strange, bloodcurdling and erotic events. The film does not only borrow its inspiration from horror films, but also from porn. As the end approaches, apparently unbridled powers break free; the women surrender themselves entirely to their lusts.
In the Philippines, the censor had no words to describe the alleged filth. However, supporters immediately hailed the film as a cult classic. (Gertjan Zuilhof)

THE MIDDLE MYSTERY OF KRISTO NEGRO
This is not a film by Khavn

Maybe animal lovers should come in ten minutes too late. Yet the ritual slaughter of a young water buffalo is a powerful start to a sombre and nightmarish film about the Passion of Christ. No, it doesn’t look like that are the film. This Christ has no idea either.

Not everyone can cope with it, but the film opens with what should be an age-old ritual. Several men slaughter and skin an animal in the open field. It’s a young water buffalo that continues to breathe when it hardly has any skin left. The landscape has a biblical appeal and the people are dressed in timeless garb. Less timeless are the Roman legionaries who appear and disappear. A Christ-like figure is left on his own in the empty landscape and starts dragging the carcass of the water buffalo as if it were his cross. He seems to carry all his sins through a hellish landscape that looks as if it were designed in a feverish dream.
Without the Catholic Church, there probably wouldn’t be any such thing as a cult film. The old, theatrical and mystical rituals of the church are a never-ending source of inspiration for film makers who are sensitive to a similarly hysterical rapture or who want to mock the conservative institution.
Although you could expect it from an outspokenly underground film maker like Khavn, in this case one cannot really talk about direct mockery of religion. Is it’s more that he takes the element of self chastising that is part of certain rituals (such as the acted Way of the Cross) one step further and makes the ritual more real than was maybe intended.
The Hungry Ghosts programme also includes the director’s Three Days of Darkness. (Gertjan Zuilhof)

Berlinale Shorts: 28 Wilful, Disturbing and/or Mollifying Ways to Regard the World

A top-notch international jury – with actress Arta Dobroshi from Kosovo, director of the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen Lars Henrik Gass, and Philippine director Khavn de la Cruz – will pick the award winners in this year’s short film section. The Berlinale Shorts will screen 28 films from 17 countries, eleven of which will be running in the Competition, and vying for the Golden and Silver Bears for Best Short Film. The entire programme automatically qualifies for the DAAD Short Film Prize and receives a nomination for Best European Short Film. Markus Kavka will present the awards in CinemaxX3 on February 10.

Germany is making a strong showing this year with five formally complex films. In Christoph Girardet and Matthias Müller’s new film contre-jour, “the way we regard the world and how it regards us in return breaks into disturbing fragments” (K. Tieke). Humorous in the telling, but formally more reticent is Lola Randl’s Die Leiden des Herrn Karpf. Der Geburtstag – a short film about the loneliness and estrangement of the urban individual. Three wilful productions underscore the specialness of Belgium’s narrative culture. And then there’s the East, which is not a country, but a direction. This trend is illustrated by Myroslav Slaboshpytskiy’s Diagnoz from the Ukraine and Alexander Karavayev’s Devyat proloyotov vmeste from the Russian Federation, which depict the current political and economic situation in very different ways, as well as Jan Andersen’s vostok’ from France, whose title is already programmatic.

David OReilly, who won Special Mention in last year’s Short Film Competition, is back with his new digital animation Please Say Something, a film about a relationship of another kind. In Birth, Signe Baumane shows how being pregnant can feel. The Indonesian film Trip to the Wound by Edwin, who is a member of this year’s Forum NETPAC jury, will screen out of competition. The film is an artistic and political statement on the freedom of art in times of radical censorship.

The Berlinale Shorts is pleased to announce that the winner of the Prix UIP at the 2008 Berlinale, Darren Thorton’s Frankie (Ireland), won Best European Short Film at the European Film Awards in Copenhagen in December 2008.

The Berlinale Shorts jury:

Khavn De La Cruz (Philippines)
With more than 70 short films and features, this director is one of his country’s most important underground digital filmmakers. De La Cruz, who participated in the Berlinale Talent Campus 2005, is also a writer and musician, as well as director of the Philippine MOV International Digital Film Festival. With his production company Filmless Films, he has made many works, including Mondomanila: Institute of Poets, a surreal cinematic reflection on Philippine society.

Arta Dobroshi (Kosovo)
With her role in the screen drama Lorna’s Silence (winner of Best Screenplay at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival), this young actress achieved her international breakthrough and a nomination for the 2008 European Film Awards. Born in Pristina, Arta Dobroshi has played many stage roles in her country, as well as a leading role in the prize-winning German-Albanian production Magic Eye (2005), a film about the situation in Albania in 1997, when it was rocked by unrest.

Dr. Lars Henrik Gass (Germany)
Lars Henrik Gass studied literature and theatre. Since 1997, he has been director of the renowned International Short Film Festival Oberhausen. Until 2007, he was also a member of the German Short Film Award jury. He has written many essays on photography and film, and teaches at a number of universities and academies. In 2001, Gass published his book “Das ortlose Kino. Über Marguerite Duras”.

Ateneo graders stage a new version of Ibong Adarna

by Dr. Fernando Hofileña
2009-01-15

“Adarna at and Alaala ng Kristal,” the 77th production of the Ateneo Children’s Theatre (ACT), is scheduled to open on January 30, 2008 at the Irwin Theatre, Ateneo Loyola Heights campus.

Jonny Salvador, Executive Producer of ACT and Assistant Headmaster for Student Affairs of the Ateneo Grade School explains, “Choosing a Filipino play for 2009 was a deliberate move by the directors in conjunction with the celebration of Ateneo’s 150th year, its Sesquicentennial, in the Philippines. After more than six years of staging Broadway musicals, it is high time for ACT to take a different route, one that will celebrate the beauty of the Filipino language all over again. This, of course, is fueled by the theme of Ateneo’s sesquicentennial year which is nation building.”

Ace Elgar, one of the directors, shares that Khavn dela Cruz, an Ateneo alumnus, volunteered to write the script after he got wind of the fact that ACT was looking for a writer who will give the popular Filipino korido, “Ibong Adarna,” a twist. She also mentions dela Cruz’ enviable credentials: recipient of Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Award for Poetry and Fiction and the Dean’s Award for Literature from his alma mater; an acclaimed composer, songwriter, singer, pianist and writer of several rock operas; and recipient of citations from the Metro Pop Song Festival and the Ateneo Songwriting Fest as well as The John Lennon Songwriting Contest (New Jersey). To top it all off, he is also considered Father of Philippine Digital filmmaking.

Khavn surprised the directors because he did not write about the legendary quest of Don Juan for the Ibong Adarna in order to help his dying father, King Fernando (the first part of the 1,722 stanzas of “Ibong Adarna” which many Filipinos know and love). What he wrote was the last story in this romantic narrative poem – Don Juan’s search for the Reyno de los Kristales (the fourth and fifth part of the entire korido if divided into five parts), because he was driven by the desire to educate the theatre-goers, especially the younger patrons. Unfortunately this part is hitherto unheard of and unseen in this country. Faithful to the korido, Khavn embraced the same lyrical language for the script.

“Adarna at ang Alaala ng Kristal” opens with Don Juan sleeping under a tree, tired from his long journey back to Berbania. The Ibong Adarna awakens him with a song which tells him where he can find true love and about a beautiful lady named Doña Maria Blanca whom he can proudly present to his father. The heroine is the daughter of King Salermo of the Crystal Kingdom.

Though unable to find the Crystal Kingdom in three years of walking, he journeys on. Asking an old man where the kingdom is provides no help for the stranger is clueless.

He goes to a 500-year old hermit upon the advice of the old man but his effort is futile.

An 800-year old hermit whom he meets later consults with the birds and an eagle. To his joy, this eagle knows the location of the kingdom.

So the king of the bird flies to the east with Don Juan riding on its wings. Don Juan finally spots Maria Blanca bathing in a river with two other princesses.

He naughtily hides her clothes that he sees laid on a rock in order to get her attention. Soon after the bath the lady discovers that her clothes are missing and this angers her.

Contrite, Don Juan falls on his knees begging her to pardon him. Overcome with compassion for the man who humbly declares his love for her, she forgives him and warns him about the fate that befalls those who dare ask for her hand in marriage.

King Salermo orders the ardent suitor to perform a series of extremely daunting tasks such as putting the mountain in the middle of the sea and building a castle there. Don Juan does them all creditably, with Maria Blanca’s help. Feeling defeated and sensing the strong bond between his daughter and her lover, the king plans to banish them to England but even this fails because the couple eloped. Dejected, he breathes a curse: “You’ll be forgotten by Don Juan. He will leave you and marry someone else”. Then death claims him.

In the outskirts of Berbania, Don Juan is told by his sweetheart about the curse. Determined, he promises not to allow a woman to approach him. But as fate would have it, Leonora comes near him and he forgets Maria Blanca and he prepares to marry her.

At the celebration, however, a program is held per Maria Blanca’s request. In the drama a female lumad strikes her male partner repeatedly. Each blow inflicts pain on Don Juan, restoring his memory. He then remembers Maria Blanca whom he finally weds.

In this production, dela Cruz teams up with a number of fellow Ateneo alumni giving back to Ateneo that has nourished their creativity and drive toward excellence for the greater glory of God.

(Maynila Sa Mga Pangil Ng Dilim)

Cited as “one of the 23 films to look out for this
year” in FILM COMMENT magazine (January/February
2009).
FILM COMMENT is published bimonthly by the Film
Society of Lincoln Center, New York, USA.

OLAF MOELLER, European Editor of FILM COMMENT:
Movie icon Bembol Roco walks the mean streets of
Manila as “Kontra Madiaga,” a character invented by
combining the actor’s two most celebrated
performances: innocent country bumpkin Julio Madiaga
from 1975’s Manila in the Claws of Light and
death-squad leader Commander Kontra of 1989’s Fight
for Us. Haunted by memories of loss assembled from
snippets from these and other Lino Brocka films,
Kontra’s soul is long dead from butchering resistance
fighters, but the Madiaga part of him continues to
search Orpheus-like for the girl for whom he came to
the capital. Shot from the hip in a single day and
shot through with video-quotes from film history, this
is conceptual minimalism povera at its most
politically edgy.

World Premiere, VIENNA INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL:
A sturdy man with a dark expression follows a delicate
beauty, clad in innocent white clothes, through the
streets of Manila. In his attempt to keep her away
from the trash and vice of the metropolis, he becomes
a murderer. Sometimes he simply stands around with his
arms folded, observing people in the streets and
unleashing tirades of hatred in the form of an inner
monologue. Yet at the same time, he repeatedly
proceeds to horrible crimes, which he considers
himself chosen to commit.

SYNOPSIS
“Manila In The Fangs Of Darkness” follows Kontra
Madiaga, a soul lost in an urban Hell trying to find
his beloved Ligaya. Trapped not only by time and his
deeds, his past is also framed by film and the scenes
that he is doomed to revisit.

DIALOGUE EXCERPT
“How did I get here. Ligaya? I followed you. I’d
follow you anywhere. Even if I don’t understand why we
have to go to these places? Are these the only places
we end up in? You made me believe there’s a good world
out there. But is this all the world we deserve? These
lost, decrepit, hopeless, nowhere to go places. And
who am I to think I could save you from them? How many
times have we seen our story get told and retold? How
many times have we passed through here? Nothing
changes. I follow and I’m always too late. But I’d
still follow you. I’d follow you anywhere. And maybe
the next time the story gets retold, and it will,
maybe the next time I follow you, I’d have done enough
that I can change how it ends.” — KONTRA MADIAGA
